Description

Hizbullah's arsenal has for long been a divisive issue among the Lebanese who are sharply split over whether the powerful Shiite Muslim group should keep its weapons after the party's guerrilla war led to an Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon in 2000, ending an 18-year occupation. The Lebanese row over Hizbullah's arms has sharpened since May 2008 when the party was accused by caretaker Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri's Future Movement and its allies in the Western-backed March 14 coalition of turning its weapons against fellow Lebanese. Sectarian street clashes between pro- and anti-government groups erupted in Beirut and other areas on May 7, 2008 after Hizbullah's fighters and their supporters briefly took over the Muslim western sector of the capital to protest a government decision to dismantle the party's private telecommunications network. More than 80 people were killed in those clashes. Since then, Hizbullah has come under harsh verbal attacks by the Future Movement and the March 14 groups for using its arms in internal political conflicts amid calls for the party to surrender its arms to the Lebanese state.
